While Mohs Surgery requires technical excellence and judgement, reconstruction also requires three dimensional artistry.  Dr. Hayes Gladstone performs skin cancer reconstruction surgery at the Gladstone Clinic for patients in San Ramon, Danville, Pleasanton, San Francisco, and the surrounding communities in California.

Following the treatment of the tumor by Mohs surgery, Dr. Gladstone will perform the repair of the defect. Dr. Gladstone will discuss with you which types of reconstruction are appropriate and which option he believes will give you the best scar. There are definite principles of reconstruction that Dr. Gladstone follows, and has taught many colleagues around the country and the world. Some defects can be closed in a line; other defects may need to be closed by moving adjacent skin (flaps); others may be repaired with skin from behind or in front of the ear (grafts). In less common instances, a piece of skin from the forehead or cheek may be attached for 1-3 weeks to the defect, and then reduced.

What are the Post-Care Instructions After Skin Cancer Reconstruction?

For most reconstruction on the head and neck, Dr. Gladstone uses all absorbable sutures which do not need to be touched afterward. You will be given directions on how to take care of your wound. Your body is amazing in terms of healing, but it is still a process that can take several months. When human skin is cut via surgery, there can be a scar. The key is reducing the scar as much as possible.

How is the Scar Minimized?

There are several methods to minimize your scar, and Dr. Gladstone will go over them with you. In rare instances, some scar revision may be needed—usually with either a laser or spot dermabrasion in order to optimize your results.

The Gladstone Clinic is passionately committed to curing your skin cancer and minimizing your scar.
