About Hayes B. Gladstone MD

Dr. Hayes Gladstone went to secondary school at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio where he independently studied fetal surgery and development and graduated with Honors in History and was elected to the Cum Laude Society. He completed a combined Bachelors and Masters Degree Program at Tufts University and the Fletcher School of Law of Diplomacy and graduated with Summa Cum Laude Honors on both his Degree and Thesis. He earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester. During Medical School, he received fellowships to study the late effects of the Atomic Bomb in Hiroshima, Japan as well as treating Burn Patients in Haifa, Israel.

Dr. Gladstone then completed his Surgical Internship at the University of California, San Francisco. He completed a Research Fellowship at UCSF investigating the role of Growth Factors in wound healing under the mentorship of Dr’s Robert Jackler, MD and Robert Schindler, MD in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He then trained in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Washington as well as Dermatology. He completed an NIH fellowship at the University of Washington focusing on the use of virtual reality in dermatologic surgery. Dr Gladstone then completed a prestigious UCLA affiliated Mohs Surgery, Reconstruction and Cosmetic Surgery Fellowship under the Direction of acclaimed Dermatologic Surgeon, Ronald L. Moy, MD. Dr Gladstone was a Clinical Instructor at the UCLA School of Medicine. Dr Gladstone is Board Certified in Dermatology.

Dr. Gladstone has lectured worldwide on his cosmetic and reconstructive techniques. He has been the editor of educational videos on both cosmetic procedures and reconstruction for the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, the specialty’s primary surgical society. He was the Program Chair of the 2015 Annual Meeting. He has been the past Director of the Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Course at the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting. He has served on Master Reconstruction Panels here and abroad and was selected for the prestigious Iron Surgeon Competition. Because of his experience, Dr. Gladstone has often been asked to be an expert witness in dermatologic surgery malpractice cases.

Dr. Gladstone has been active in his professional societies. He has been on the Board of Directors and the past President of the San Francisco Dermatology Society as well as the Board of Directors and past President of the Pacific Dermatology Association, the largest regional dermatology society in the United States. He was also on the Board of Directors of both the San Mateo Division and the California Division of the American Cancer Society. In 2015, he was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, the specialty’s leading surgery and cosmetic organization.

Dr. Gladstone has 100 publications on Mohs surgery, reconstruction and aesthetic procedures including 30 chapters, and is the co-editor of a well-received book on cosmetic procedures that has been translated into several languages.

Dr. Gladstone feels fortunate to be in the field of medicine, and privileged to treat patients. It is important for him to give back. For 11 years, he volunteered at the student-run Stanford homeless clinic in Menlo Park.  He is the co-founder with Murad Alam, MD of Northwestern of the Blade and Light Society and is the President of Blade and Light International. This is a nonprofit organization (www.bladelight.org) that sends teams of fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons abroad to perform volunteer Mohs surgery and reconstruction.

Prior to medical school, Dr. Gladstone was an award-winning photojournalist and sports editor in Colorado. That two-dimensional visual design background has served as a foundation for his three-dimensional vision in reconstruction and aesthetic procedures. As a former competitive athlete, he understands the arbitrariness of the aging process. In his spare time, he plays tennis, squash, skis, practices the classical guitar, shoots photos and continues to write.
