What Is a Mole Removal?

Melanin is the pigment in your skin and produces cells known as melanocytes. While melanocytes are normally spread evenly throughout your skin, they may sometimes grow in clusters. When they do, the result is moles on your skin.

Everyone has moles, and most of them are harmless. Even so, when they change or grow over time, there is a potential for them to become cancerous. Mole removal is sometimes needed to eliminate atypical moles, which may be identified by the following:

• A = Asymmetry: Is the mole an asymmetric shape?
• B = Border: Does the mole have a jagged or rough border?
• C = Color: Is the mole a uniform color or is it varying shades of brown, black, tan, or red?
• D = Diameter: Would a normal sized pencil eraser cover your mole? If your mole is larger than an eraser, the odds of it becoming melanoma is much greater.
• E = Evolution: Has your mole changed in size, color, or shape over time?

Your mole will be eliminated, but you could need stitches to close the surrounding skin. If so, Dr. Gladstone will provide you with instructions on caring for your stitches, and will schedule a follow-up appointment for you to have them removed.

Will I Have Scars After Getting a Mole Removal?

There is a slight possibility of scarring, particularly if you are having a very large mole removed.

When Will I See the Results?

The results from a mole removal procedure are noticed immediately.

How Long Will the Results of a Mole Removal Last?

The mole removal procedure is designed to provide permanent results. Even so, moles may sometimes reappear in the same location months or years later. Unfortunately, there is no way to determine when or if new moles may appear.
