Here at Gladstone Clinic, we proudly offer both the SmartGraft® and NeoGraft® hair transplant procedures. Knowing which one is best is something many people struggle with, which is why Dr. Hayes provides the following information for those in San Ramon, San Francisco, Pleasanton and the surrounding communities in California.

What Is SmartGraft® vs. NeoGraft®?

Both procedures utilize the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method, and are designed to reduce linear scars. The difference is that the SmartGraft® procedure is highly automated, and allows for the removal, separation, and storage of grafts with a single, hand-held device. NeoGraft® requires more manual operation, and may, therefore, take slightly longer to perform.

Benefits of SmartGraft® vs. NeoGraft®

There are unique advantages and disadvantages to each procedure. You may prefer the SmartGraft® procedure if you are treating a very large section of your scalp because of the reduced amount of time required. On the other hand, NeoGraft® might be the better option if you are treating only a small area and would like the attention-to-detail that comes from manually sorting and placing grafts.

Who Is the Ideal Candidate for a SmartGraft® vs. NeoGraft®?

Before considering either procedure, you will need to ensure you are healthy enough to receive anesthesia, and that you have no underlying scalp conditions, such as open sores or infections.

What Do I Need to Do Before a SmartGraft® vs. NeoGraft®?

Similar preparation is required for each procedure and may include washing your hair with an antiseptic shampoo, stopping smoking, and refraining from using blood-thinning medications such as aspirin.

How Long Does it Take to Perform a SmartGraft® vs. NeoGraft®?

It takes considerably less time to perform SmartGraft®; however, the exact amount of time required will be based on the number of units extracted, regardless of the procedure you choose.

What to Expect After a SmartGraft® vs. NeoGraft®?

Some swelling or discomfort may be present for a few days. This can easily be managed with an over-the-counter medication. In addition, Dr. Gladstone sometimes prescribes medication for those with a very low pain tolerance or patients who have had an especially large number of grafts performed.

Will I Have Scars After Getting a SmartGraft® vs. NeoGraft®?

Scarring is very minimal with both procedures, but will nonetheless be visible in your donor area. As new hair continues to grow, these scars will gradually be covered up until they are completely disguised.

When Will I See the Results?

It will take some time for you to notice the results of either procedure. You may first notice fuller hair two to three months following treatment.

How Long Will the Results of a SmartGraft® vs. NeoGraft® Last?

The results of both procedures are designed to be permanent.
